Zmiana pola widzenia. Druk Nowoczesny i awangarda [Changing the fields of view. Contemporary print and avant -garde]

The ideas of modern graphic design and of modernization of printmaking and typography were developed in the milieus of the interwar avant-garde. Formulation of visual message creation rules was expected to facilitate popularization of the new art and making it familiar to a wide range of potential audience. The exhibition entitled “Changing the Field of View” reminds us of how that revolution was effected, what solutions were offered by the avant-garde, and what way and to what extent they were adopted by the then mainstream graphic art, including advertising, designing books and periodicals, or propaganda posters. What is the point of reference for the exhibition is Władysław Strzemiński’s concept of Functional Typography, closely related to New Typography suggested by Jan Tschichold. Against the background of international relations and mutual inspirations of European designers, the exhibition shows designs by Polish artists, and experimental projects developed by European avant-garde milieus including those of German, Czech, and Russian artists.

The spatial arrangement of the exhibition, entitled ‘a divided dot’, has been created by Marlena Kudlicka. The artist refers to the concept of a point in typography. The other important points of reference for her in the creation of the spatial composition of the exhibition included the concepts by Władysław Strzemiński and Jan Tschichold: a pure and direct form of communication.

The exhibition has its vast catalogue in two language versions, designed by Waldemar Węgrzyn. In its form, the catalogue refers to the concepts of Functional Typography and New Typography
